At the CYBATHLON 2016, held at ETH Zurich, international teams competed in disciplines that simulated real-life situations faced by people with physical disabilities. The Swiss team HSR Enhanced relied on a specially developed wheelchair platform – and on the high-performance drive solution from Antrimon, which played a key role in winning gold medals in both 2016 and 2020.

Challenge
For the Powered Wheelchair Race, a reliable, powerful and at the same time highly sensitive drive unit was required. The wheelchair had to overcome obstacles such as stairs, ramps and uneven terrain – with precise control, high efficiency and minimal weight. In addition, the drive components needed to be quickly available and perfectly matched to the mechanical design of the HSR Enhanced team’s system.
Antrimon’s Solution
Antrimon supplied a customised drive solution consisting of:
- Brushless flat motor (external rotor)
24 V DC, n₁ = 4840 rpm, M₁ = 0.13 Nm - Reinforced planetary gearbox
i = 216:1, η = 0.75 → n₂ = 22 rpm, M₂ = 21 Nm - Technical consulting and system design
to ensure optimal integration into the wheelchair’s overall system
By combining high torque, compact design and fast-response control, the drive unit met all requirements for performance, agility and reliability within the demanding CYBATHLON competition environment.
Outcome
With the support of Antrimon’s drive solution, the HSR Enhanced team won the gold medal at the CYBATHLON 2016 and confirmed its success again at the CYBATHLON 2020. The project was additionally honoured with the FUTUR Recognition Award 2017.
About the CYBATHLON
The CYBATHLON, launched in 2016 by ETH Zurich, is an international competition that brings together people with physical disabilities and cutting-edge assistive technologies. At the CYBATHLON 2016, 66 teams from 25 countries competed at the SWISS Arena in Kloten. The event impressively demonstrated how mechatronic innovation can improve everyday life for people with disabilities.
In 2020, the CYBATHLON was held for the first time as a Global Edition, due to the pandemic – a decentralised event with teams from around the world recording their races locally. Once again, the HSR Enhanced team proved its outstanding performance and won gold in the Powered Wheelchair Race category.
